Changes - sculpture process 1

I have separated the process for this sculpture into two parts. The first will be the two side center pieces which where cast finally in cement.

1. After I had completed the final drawings for all the parts of the sculpture I began To make wooden moulds for each of the five parts. The moulds were made from a number of thick sheets of mdf wood cut with a jigsaw and glued together. The moulds are sanded and painted with several layers of shellac. This is make the mould both durable and water resistant.

2. The form is built up using the mould as a stencil. The larger parts such as the door and background of the sky where sculpted in modeling clay.

3. After the the larger parts of the doors and the clouds where completed I made a silicone mould of each part. The silicone is mixed with a 'paint on ' catalyst which sets quickly. It is best to complete the whole surface in one application. Make sure that everything is prepared and ready to go before you mix the catalyst with the resin. Don't estimate the ratios - FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE EXACTLY-

4. Apply vasaline to the inner edge of the wooden mould.A fibregalss and resin skin is set ontop of the silicone.Again with the fibreglass cut a generous amount of strips are cut and everything shopuld be ready to go before you mix the catalyst with the resin.

5.Once the fibreglass and silicone mould is set the wooden structure is taken apart. There are four parts to the wooden mould which are screwed together on a thick sheet of mdf.

6. The clay is taken away and the silicone mould is cleaned. This procedure could be completed with only fiberglass resin if you had experience of using such material.

7. The wooden mould is then put back together with the wooden sheet placed on the opposite end.

8. The silicone/ fibreglass resin mould is placed on the base and the entire mould is sealed at the edges using vasaline. The inner edges of the wooden mould are covered in vaseline to ensure an esay release.

9. A sufficient amount of plaster is poured in to the mould.Once the plaster has set and allowed to dry properly the wooden mould is taken apart and the plaster cast separated. Make sure that the plaster has dried sufficiently, if not more delicate areas maybe lost when separating the silicone from the plaster.

10. The same procedure is repeated for the secound wooden mould.

Once The two plaster casts are dry I began To carve inside the car and the buildings in the backround.
