Changes - part two - 2

The fuschia were cast initially in small blocks of clear resin so that they could be cast in one time. This was due to the fact that they are real fuschia and I didn't know how they would react. The fuschia were red initially but became white due to the base in the catalyst although I think it was a lucky accident as it went better with the aluminium and the cement.

The planes were cast in wax and given to a foundry to be cast in aluminium. The resin was then applied in layers and the planes and fuchias added. The layers are allowed to almost set and then the next layer is applied. As the layers set the resin will shrink a little and the next layer of resin applied will seep beneath the last. This should cause any major concern once the mould has been prepared properly.

Once all the layers have cast and let to set the casts are taken from the wooden moulds. This whole process of casting resin in this manner is known as 'cold casting'.The resin moulds are then sanded with a medium grain paper using a good quality orbital sander. They are then sanded with 240 and 320 and finally by hand using wet and dry paper. The resin cast are the polished using a 'buffing brush ' attached to a power drill. Don't press down to heavy while buffing or you will burn into the resin.Add polishing wax to your initial brush and apply to the resin cast.Remove the buffing brush and apply a clean soft larger buffing brush and polish again.
