Changes - part two - 1

The centre piece and two outer pieces for this sculpture were cast finally in clear casting resin with aluminium spitfire planes and fuschia flowers embedded in the resin.

The wooden moulds were cut from thick sheets of mdf and glued together to a depth of 8cm. The wood was then painted in shellac and sanded in fine paper and then painted again in shellac. This process was repeated four times until the surface was completely sealed and smooth. The mould is the treated with a release wax which is let to dry and polished.

A PVA release agent can be used but I find vasaline a nuch better release agent. If you are pouring a series of layers the pva at points can be come embedded as the resin 'shrinks' a little.Vasaline is a petrochemical as is the resin so they do not react against each other and it's also cheaper although this would not be my reason. If you spent years developing work don't 'cheap out' at the last few steps it will cost you in the long run.
