In Tania Kovats 'The drawing book'she refers to the drawing as a primordial force to make an imprint. She talks of the analogy of Pliny's shadow a classical greek story depicting an act of tracing by the potter Boutade's daughter.Being distraught that her lover is set to sail maybe never to return she traces the outline of his face cast on the wall by the candle light while he sleeps. Using a burnt coal she takes from the fire an immediate act is carried out,a kinetic tracing,an act measuring space, distance and emotion.

This act of tracing cannot make her lover stay or secure his return but it's actions articulate and express her pain.
