I had the good fortune to be asked to work as a specialist painter on the Game Of Thrones prelude called House of Dragons which will be released in 2022 on HBO. I cannot show or put any images related directly to the production but the project brought me to parts of Spain I probably would have never seen otherwise.
At first I had been told that Casares would be the primary destination but as it happened we arrived in a smaller city called Gaudix in the province of Granada. In some respects it reminded me of when I travelled through in Spain in the early nineties, It seemed a little more traditional with the classic tobacco shops and shopping centers \ markets .
In Madrid a lot of these markets still exist but with more units closed as they lose out to the larger supermarket chains. The city is famous also for the cave houses which can be seen as you walk further upwards in the older part of the city.
Spain is a big country with a seriously deep history and as you travel more it's complexity increases and you begin see more of it's layers. While the north of Europe was still frozen during the ice age the Iberian peninsula had been thriving for centuries. Ice age - Wikipedia
Later the Romans and the babarian hords would arrive then the Arab invasions, after the reconquest by the Spanish kings leading to the golden era and the discovery of the Americas.
A lot of the conquistadors \ conquerors\ came from this NECK OF THE WOODS\ region\ . Like Francisco Pizzaro Francisco Pizarro - Wikipedia . The actual statue of himself in Trujillo is in fact Hernan Cortes. The American sculptor Charles Rumsey had initially made the piece to be presented to Mexico which in the end took a dim view of Cortes and declined so it was given to Trujillo as Pizarro!
