40/ 40 / 40 Conde Duque - Cultural center - Madrid

On the twentieth of March as part of Ireland´s Cultural Presidency Program the Irish embassy organized and exhibition at the Conde Duque cultural center in Madrid.

The event celebrated Ireland forty years as a member of the European Union. The concept of the exhibition was to exhibit forty artists either Irish or living in Ireland under the age of forty. The show was also used to cement and develop business contacts with the country and promote all things Irish.

Although there were some interesting pieces in the show and knowing the work of a good deal of the artists I felt that the show should have been a lot more interesting. There were no sculptures, animations or video work and the reception was held in a different part of the same building so once you had seen the show you moved for drinks and food. I know that this happens more and more a shows where you can neither drink or eat in the same area as the work but I think it´s just wrong.

It was also unfortunate that only one of the artist was present at the opening but again maybe this is more a sign of the times and in these difficult times at least the artists are managing to exhibit their work internationally through the help of the government and the Irish Embassy. It was very encouraging to see all the work of artists I know in Madrid I did feel like something positive and growing.
