Making the toy horse

The large horse shape will be cut from one single block of styrofoam.I have found after trying a multitude of implements that the best of all was an electric chainsaw. 1. The large foam block which is 8 x 4 x 4 ft is cut into rectangular blocks of 1 x 1 x 2 ft. This really is a messy job so it is best to do as much as possible outside and wear protective clothing from head to toe.Styrofiam is static so it gets everywhere. 2. Make a stencil in cardboard to the scale of the desired horse and refer to it continuously as you cut out the shapes to make up the horse.THe horse will be made in sections parts of the legs first glued together using wood glue and allowd to dry.The basic shape of the legs, torso, head and tail are made. 3. The sections are then joined and glued together using dowl wood and wood glue.Once the basic form of the horse has been created the horse can be carved back more carefully using either , a hotknife, a bread knife or a wire brush connected to a drill. I prefer to use a bread knife and sand paper. 4. I will make the saddle separate create a mould from the saddle and attach the saddle after the horse is complete. 5. The horse is covered in plaster and fine mesh and the surface when dry is sanded smooth.Matches are then applied to the entire surface of the horse.THis same procedure was used for the making of the tree ( blog archive august 2011). 6. The purpose of this is to create a texture on the surafce of the horse rather than the surface just being smooth. 7. After the entire form is complete sanded and sealed with shellac a series of moulds will be taken off the form of the horse in sections.THese moulds will be in fibreglass.
