Nostalgia 4 - Ophelia and spitfires

Title - Ophelia Dimensions - ( H x W x D ) - 110 x 110 x 16 cm \ approx\ Medium – Clear resin, pigment , matches, shellac, wood. The longer I know this piece the more I read from it or see in it. Romantic notions of spitfires and John Millia's painting Ophelia were the inspiration for this sculpture. Nostalgia 1 --- The notion of returning home.

Nostalgia / Definition - The notion of returning home from the Greek words Nostos and algos, resulting in a condition of ACHING and inner sadness. In Ireland we always talk of The Irish Diaspora and how our past persecutions had us spread to the four corners of the world . In recent times there have masssive changes on our small island and now it's a country of migration rather than emigration and opportunity. But there is no doubt that this diaspora has framed and for a great part moulded the idea of what it is to be Irish. NOSTALGIA -- The word is surprisingly new and termed first as a condition or more correctly a state resulting in numerous side effects. First used to define a condition Swiss soldiers suffered while fighting abroad. It was a mental state brought on from being away from home and suffering a deep aching sadness with the resulting stress manifested in many physical side effects....

Arco 2014 Madrid

I had a fleeting visit to the Arco 2014 art fair due to the fact that it took place at the same time as Artmadrid 2014 and I had to spent the majority of time there. It´s such an enormous fair that I decided I would concentrate on a theme in the work that I saw instead of trying to get everything in. So I took texture and light as subjects in the works I saw. The first intriguing piece was at the Stefan Ropke gallery which was essentially a large piece of crumbled paper but had a lovely soft tissue texture and the second piece was this portrait of a head in boxes not very original maybe but really well painted, loose and watery texture mmm.
